Our family has been in the cattle business since 1945. I, Jeremy Parker, am the 4th generation to work on the farm, and my dad, uncle, and two brothers also help out.
The farm is about 12 miles east of Salem, MO. It is 900+ acres of rolling hills with about 1/3 being wooded and the rest split between hilltop pastures and bottomland hayfields. The Meremac River, which starts 2 miles above the farm, splits the property in half. It has always been a working farm, providing the main livelihood for every generation at some point in time. For the past twenty years, beef cattle have been the only thing raised on the farm with the exception of a small meat goat herd the past three years.
While we have seen many changes in farming and ranching throughout the decades, especially in the late 1990s when a growing number of ranchers stopped sending their animals to the feedlots to be fattened on grain, soy and other supplements, we have proudly raised our beef on pasture for more than 30 years. However, we just started marketing directly to the public a little over three years ago.
